Electrolysis

What is electrolysis?

We’re all for modern technology, but sometimes the best results come from the original approaches. Being one of the first known methods of permanent hair removal, electrolysis takes us back to our roots in more ways than one. Developed in the mid 19th century, it works by sending a safe amount of electrical energy to the follicle of the hair which, over time, stops it from ever growing back.

Who is the ideal candidate?

Electrolysis is only recommended for those rocking grey, blonde or red hair. The only time we’d ever stray from these rules is to use it for those stubborn facial hairs that won’t quite respond to laser hair removal (but, of course, we’ll discuss that with you during your laser treatment)!

What’s the process?

A consultation is a must for anyone wanting to try electrolysis to ensure it is the best method for you. If we establish that electrolysis is the way forward, we’ll create a personalised treatment plan and discuss how it might change according to your growth cycles and patterns. Then it’s time for the fun part – treatment!

The time of each session will vary between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the area(s) being treated. After the first session, you will be able to see a slight reduction in growth, but really noticeable results usually take about four treatments. Most clients need about six to eight treatments in total for permanent hair removal, but sometimes it can reach 10. We’ll cover all this info during your initial consultation though!

Please remove all fake tan and we’d love it if you could take off your makeup prior to each session, too.

Which areas can it be used on?

Electrolysis works anywhere, but it is most commonly used for the upper lip and chin. Because it is smaller in size, electrolysis is ideal for those hard-to-reach places that laser just can’t seem to hit, such as the very bottom of the nostril or the corner of the lip. It’s also great for monobrows, which is an area that laser can’t reach (we don’t want laser beams near the eyes… even with block-out goggles on)!

How does it differ from laser hair removal?

Although laser is considered a form of permanent hair removal, it still requires maintenance every so often. Electrolysis on the other hand doesn’t. Once the hair follicle is dead, it stays that way for life! It is also the safer option for some areas that laser can’t reach, such as around the eyes (see above).

Does it hurt?

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but electrolysis isn’t a pleasant experience (at least we’re honest, right?). It feels similar to laser hair removal, but due to the use of an electrical current as opposed to a laser heat, it’s a bit more intense. For permanent, stress-free results though, we believe it’s worth the discomfort! We recommend applying a numbing agent an hour prior to your appointment to take the edge off.

Is it safe?

It sure is! It’s been used for centuries and is still the world’s only form of permanent hair removal, so that speaks for itself, doesn’t it?

How much does it cost?

It varies between clients and their needs, which will all be discussed in during your initial consultation. Prices generally start at about $80 per session.
